“Not for the Life of Me” – Thoroughly Modern Millie
Music: Jeanine Tesori Lyrics: Dick Scanlan
Prohibition was established in the U.S. when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified on this day in 1919. Many people refused to obey the silly law, including our titular leading lady who rejects societal constraints and embraces a new modern life in this bouncy number. Unfortunately for Millie, her scandalous ways land her in prison along with half of Manhattan when they are caught in a speakeasy. Fortunately for us, after fourteen years and countless arrests, the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th in 1933.
