“U.S.S.R” – Bed and Sofa

Music: Polly Pen   Lyrics: Laurence Klavan

The U.S.S.R. dissolved on this day in 1991, but while the Soviet Union was in power, the silent film this musical is based upon was released.  The story depicts a polygamous relationship between a husband and wife and the former’s old friend in post-Revolution Russia.  In this stark, refined number, the wife Ludmilla compares the U.S.S.R. to her sister as she laments the men in her life.
