“Shakalaka Baby” – Bombay Dreams
Music: A.R. Rahman Lyrics: Don Black
This insane fusion of dance and song was first heard in the Indian Tamil-language film Mudhalvan, released on this day in 1999, reused in Nayak, a remake of the previous film in the Hindi language, and then added to this musical about a boy from the Bombay slums who dreams of being a Bollywood star. Bombay was renamed Mumbai in 1995, a plot point in the show which confronts the complex issue of how this affects identity as well as the price of fame, forbidden love, and family obligations.
