“The Country’s in the Very Best of Hands” – Li’l Abner
Music: Gene De Paul Lyrics: Johnny Mercer
In this musical lampooning rural Southern life, a town is designated a bomb testing site after being deemed unnecessary. However, the titular bumpkin and the local parson report that the country’s in the very best of hands in this satirical number. When comic strip Li’l Abner (on which this show is based) premiered on this day in 1934, the country really was in the very best of hands for 43 years, those of cartoonist Al Capp.
