“Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes/Lorelei & Moulin Rouge!

Music: Jule Styne   Lyrics: Leo Robin

This dazzling gem sung by an American showgirl seeking her fortune in Paris in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is the quintessential ode to gold-digging, or rather diamond-digging.  Marilyn Monroe delivered her iconic rendition of the song in the film version of the musical which had its opening in Los Angeles on this day in 1953, and the song also made an appearance as part of a medley in movie musical Moulin Rouge!  (The song was also used in a revised version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes entitled Lorelei–the original Broadway productions of both starred another famous blond, Carol Channing.)
