“Summertime” – Porgy and Bess
Music: George Gershwin Lyrics: DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin
Set in a black tenement in South Carolina, this highly lauded yet controversial show is the official opera of the state. The opera tells the story of a crippled man named Porgy and how he tries to woo Bess away from drugs and an abusive relationship. In contrast to the action, this aria sung in all three acts tells us that it is summertime and the living is easy. While the living may not be easy for the show’s characters, now is the time to take it easy in honor of the season.
