“Why Am I Me?” – Shenandoah

Music: Gary Geld   Lyrics: Peter Udell

Set during the American Civil War, this musical about a patriarch and his efforts to keep his family out of the fray is a plaintive retrospect with universal themes.  In a moment of bonding between two children from very different backgrounds, the curious kids ask themselves the question, “Why am I me?”  Most people probably wonder about the answer when they’re kids as well as adults, but it was definitely a concern of Gregor Mandel, the father of genetics born on this day in 1822.
